Nadine Ezard

The Alcohol & Drug Service (ADS) aims to improve outcomes for people who use substances through high-quality clinical trial and health services research. They work together with the National Centre for Clinical Research on Emerging Drugs (NCCRED) a national clinical-academic consortium of St Vincent’s Health Australia, University of New South Wales, Curtin University and Flinders University. NCCRED was established in 2018 to address health harms related to methamphetamine and other drugs of emerging concern.

The ADS and NCCRED research team have undertaken clinician-led, multi-disciplinary, world-first research into new treatments for methamphetamine use disorder, including pharmacotherapies, medication assisted psychotherapies, and digital interventions. They have also developed and researched models of care which extend specialist addiction care to rural and regional areas. They work with models of partnership of lived-living experience involvement that supports research that is relevant and feasible for community.

The team is currently undertaking a clinical trial providing pharmacotherapy for methamphetamine withdrawal in inpatient settings, winner of the 2024 St Vincent’s “Transform the System – Global Impact Award”.  They are also undertaking digital interventions for methamphetamine use disorder (see www.nccred.org.au) and developing tele-health supported models of care for withdrawal management in NSW.
