Bio

Professor Richard Chye is a highly respected palliative care physician and academic whose work has substantially advanced end-of-life and supportive care research in Australia. Over nearly three decades, he has helped establish the first academic centre for palliative care in Sydney, integrating community, hospital and private-practice services across Eastern Sydney; led clinical trials and research into novel interventions, including medicinal cannabis for cancer-related anorexia and pilot studies on pain management, delirium prevention, depression in palliative patients; contributed substantially to understanding patient outcomes, symptom control, quality-of-life, and ethical decision-making in palliative care — shaping evidence-based practices and informing public policy; and influenced the formal recognition of palliative medicine as a medical specialty in Australia through advocacy, education, and leadership (including helping found the Australasian Chapter of Palliative Medicine). In short, his academic research and leadership have helped professionalise palliative care, promote compassionate end-of-life practices, and generate robust evidence for interventions — thereby improving care quality for patients and families across the country.
