The Nursing Research Institute (NRI) leads high-quality, nurse-led, and multidisciplinary research to advance cardiovascular care and strengthen health systems.Â
A collaboration between St Vincent’s Health Network Sydney, St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, and Australian Catholic University. Specialising in implementation science, the Institute is a national leader in cardiovascular and health services research, delivering evidence-based, equitable solutions that drive system-level change and improve health outcomes with local relevance and global impact.Â
The NRI research team specialises in large-scale, multisite clinical trials and works collaboratively with clinical, policy, consumer, and academic leaders to develop shared research priorities, integrate diverse expertise and resources, and translate evidence into policy and practice.Â
Nursing Research Institute Research Strategic Framework 2026–2031
The NRI Research Strategic Framework 2026–2031 outlines the Nursing Research Institute’s vision for the future and the next phase of its development.
Since its establishment in 2009, the NRI, together with its research partners, has made a significant contribution to advancing nursing and health services research. Between 2009 and 2025, the NRI contributed to more than 366 publications, secured $148.3 million in research funding, and collaborated across 119 research projects. Building on these achievements, the Framework provides a clear direction for the NRI to strengthen its position as a national and international leader in multidisciplinary, nurse-led health services and cardiovascular research. Central to the Framework is the NRI’s ongoing commitment to implementation science, supporting the translation of evidence into routine clinical practice to improve patient safety, quality, and equity of care.
Guided by its strategic priorities, the Framework establishes a coherent pathway for delivering high-impact research, advancing excellence in evidence translation, fostering strategic partnerships, and building research capacity. It also reinforces the NRI’s commitment to strengthening the nurse researcher workforce and supporting clinician researchers and early- to mid-career researchers as the next generation of research leaders.
